Garratt Locomotives of the World

By Durrant, A E.

The author is well fitted to write on this subject. His contact with Garratts extends back forty years to his schooldays. Extensive practical experience commenced in 1955, when he was seconded from Swindon to the East African Railways in Nairobi. Since 1967 he has resided mainly in South Africa, with a spell in Australia, and has seen, photographed, and recorded Garratts in regular service on four continents. Of the three countries having the largest numbers of Garratts, South Africa, East Africa, and Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, he has lived in two and been a frequent visitor to the third, and the action photographs illustrating this book show that his exposure to the Garratt locomotive was by no means academic.
